Woodlands Hospital has planned a week of activities to celebrate its 40 years of service. In a press release the hospital said that starting today, it will distribute hampers to expectant mothers at the hospital, grant free laboratory tests for 40 patients, a 10% discount on ultrasounds, a 5% discount on prescription drugs at its pharmacy and a free glass of local juice at the hospital’s cafeteria. It will also host a staff appreciation dinner in its compound on Saturday to close its activities.
Woodlands officially opened its doors on June 2, 1969 at the same site where it is currently located. The hospital started with an out-patient department, a six-bed maternity ward, a labour room, nursery, a seven-bed male ward, a 12-bed female ward, four private rooms and an operating theatre.
Its first two doctors were Dr A A C Fund-A-Fat who is currently a director and Dr R Kissoondyal who gave the hospital its name. In 1989, Dr Fung-A-Fat, W I Lee and Dr N Gobin assumed management of the hospital. Gobin was later selected to be managing director.
