Cabinet recently appointed new rice assessment committees in five regions to expedite the hearing and settlement of land disputes.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release committees were set up in regions two, three, four, five and six at farmers’ request. Farmers had asked for more assistance from the Rice Assessment Committee. The committees will be effective from March 6, 2009 to March 5, 2011.
The agriculture ministry said the new committees are also tasked with resolving issues related to the payment of rates by landlords since most lands are rented to farmers for agricultural activities.
According to GINA the Region Two Chairperson on the committee is Sunil Scarce while Bibi Shadick was appointed to represent Wakenaam and Leguan Islands and from the right bank of the Bonasika River to the left bank of the Demerara River, Region Three. In Region Four, Cecil Sullivan was appointed while the Region Five appointee is Jaya Manickchand and Region Six Chairperson is Adrian Anamayah.
