The Diamond, East Bank Regional Hospital has boosted its service as it is now offering gynaecology and obstetrics care.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Dr Abdulla Amin was scheduled to start serving at the hospital from yesterday.
Dr Amin has served at the maternity and obstetrics ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) since 1999 and the ministry deployed him to serve at the Diamond centre. The ministry intends that high risk and other obstetrics and gynaecology cases be handled at the Diamond hospital instead of the GPHC. These include cases such as a previous caesarean section, hypertension and diabetes in pregnancy, and all pregnancies that entailed previous surgeries. GINA said these services will be available to the entire region including to Linden and Supenaam.
Dr Amin noted that the provision of these services will reduce the burden at the GPHC. The Diamond hospital is equipped with an operating theatre which can handle general surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology cases. It also boasts an intensive care unit and recovery room.
The gynaecology clinic will look at cases such as ovarian cysts, urinary tract infections and will do visual inspections of the cervix to diagnose cervical cancer. The release said it will also be staffed with three midwives along and a nurse to aid in providing these services.
