-Uprising crushes Black Pearl
Five fiery goals from Santos’ Michael Pedro were just what the doctor ordered when they opposed the University of Guyana (UG) who plunged to a humiliating defeat while Black Pearl were crushed by Uprising as another round of the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Western Union First Division competition was contested at the Camptown ground.
In the 2 pm curtain raiser Santos ploughed nine sturdy goals past the UG uprights while the academicians only managed to score once and Uprising fired away three goals against Black Pearl who failed to retaliate.
Uprising and Santos, recently relegated from Premier League status, now have two consecutive wins making it two for two while Black Pearl have lost both their matches and UG only one. Their other match-up which was not contested is to be rescheduled to another date.
Santos came out attacking and were able to draw first blood as early as the fourth minute from a Christopher Williams strike.
They then doubled their lead two minutes later when Jamal Downer got an opportunity to pierce the uprights but they were soon back to a one-goal lead when Eason Pearson struck for UG the very next minute.
Not long after Pedro made his presence felt recording his first goal in the 16th minute, double in the 24th and a hat-trick four minutes later (28th minute) which concluded the half with Santos comfortably ahead (5 – 1).
When play resumed Santos picked up where they left off, adding another goal to their unassailable lead, compliments of Joseph Payne who found an opening just two minutes into the half (47th minute).
Pedro’s fourth and fifth goals in the 59th and 72nd minutes were Santos’ seventh and ninth goal respectively while Jermain Bamfield who scored in the 61st minute accounted for Santos’ eighth goal. Daniel Favourite led the way for Uprising with a well-constructed double against Black Pearl opening the score line with a seventh minute goal which defeated the opposition’s custodian.
Uprising went up by two when Favourite recorded his second goal in the 25th minute as the first 45 minutes blew off without Black Pearl being able to score.
The final 45 minutes had one highlight – the goal from Omali Nassy that made it a three-goal victory for Uprising.
The action continues this Sunday with another double header on the Camptown ground where Thomas United will clash with Riddim Squad and Houston Stars will go up against Kitty Rangers with a 2 pm kick off time.
