Gallons of fuel, suspected to be diesel, flowed through the drains located near to America and Longden streets yesterday morning as persons nearby helped themselves by filling buckets, drums and small containers.
Persons at the scene told this newspaper that the source of the fuel was unknown though one pointed out that it may be a business in the area which stores fuel. The man said the fuel was noticed in the drains around 6 am yesterday and persons nearby started filling containers. Traces of the fuel was noticed on the pavement on America Street as a group of men at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and America Street employed the services of two vagrants who were hard at work filling two drums. One of the men told this newspaper that they ‘struck oil’ as another individual arranged a possible market for fuel collected.
Stabroek News had reported in February this year a similar occurrence where fuel, believed to be diesel, mysteriously flowed through the drains in the very area as persons rushed to fill buckets and other containers. The source of the fuel on that occasion remains unknown. The matter was being investigated by City Hall.
