Following Sunday morning’s fuel leak which was noticed on America and Longden streets, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to meet with several stakeholders, including businesses operating in the vicinity of the two city streets, to determine the source of the spill.
Executive Director of the EPA, Dr Indarjit Ramdass told Stabroek News yesterday that the matter was brought to his attention and the agency will carry out investigations to determine the source of the fuel. An official of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) told this newspaper on Monday that engineers at the M&CC will also carry out similar investigations.
On Sunday morning a number of persons, including market vendors, helped themselves by filling drums, buckets and small containers with gallons of fuel, suspected to be diesel, which flowed through the drains on America and Longden Streets. Persons at the scene told this newspaper that the fuel’s source was unknown though one person pointed out that the source may be a business place in the area which stores fuel. Traces of the fuel, which was noticed around 6 am on Sunday, were also noticed on the pavement along America Street.
Back in February this year, this newspaper had reported a similar occurrence in the very area where fuel, also suspected of being diesel, flowed mysteriously through the drains in the area and the matter, on that occasion, was being investigated by City Hall.
