Jordan had offered Guyana scholarships for five students to pursue Islamic Studies via internet video instruction, when President Bharrat Jagdeo visited in March.
Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammad of Jordan made the offer, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said yesterday. The scholarships are expected to last two years and students will be awarded degrees upon successful completion of the programme. GINA said too if the students chose to engage in other programmes they will be given additional scholarships to pursue studies at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
The objective of the scholarship programme is to educate members of the local Muslim community about Islam as a way of life that promotes peace, harmony and peaceful coexistence, the release said.
The students selected for the programme are Zohora Ally of the East Bank Demerara, Bibi Nazeela Bacchus of the West Coast Demerara, Omar Rahman Mohamed Haniff of Georgetown, Iqbal Khan of Essequibo Coast and Abdul Hafeez Mahinudin of Berbice.
