A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) member, who reportedly sexually assaulted a female civilian staffer attached to the army base at Tacama, is in police custody.

Stabroek News was reliably informed by an army source yesterday that the soldier is currently in police custody. Reports, according to the source, say that the woman was walking home on Tuesday afternoon when she was allegedly attacked.

The matter was reported to the McKenzie Police Station and the victim taken to the Linden Hospital where she was examined.

The officer, sources say, allegedly admitted to the offence; and shortly after confronting the victim at the police station he attempted to jump from an upper flat landing. He was taken to the Linden Hospital.

Efforts made to contact army officials last evening about the incident were futile.
