Being stabbed repeatedly and beaten by a man with whom she recently ended a relationship has left Sharmin McKay in severe pain at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
The 32-year-old woman, of 1321 Bachelor’s Adventure Backlands (Bare Root), was rushed to the medical institution on Wednesday evening, after she was found by a neighbour covered in blood on her steps. Her former lover is yet to be arrested.
McKay underwent emergency surgery and was admitted to the hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU) where she remained in a critical condition up to late last evening. Relatives told Stabroek News that the woman cannot speak or swallow because of stab wounds dealt to her throat. A knife is also still lodged in McKay’s abdomen.
Sharlyn Booker explained that her sister had shared a relationship with her attacker for almost two years. McKay, according to her, was assaulted by the man last month and the matter is currently being heard at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
The man, Booker explained, had spent just over two weeks in prison and was released last Friday on bail. Her sister and the man lived together at the Bachelor’s Adventure house prior to the incident.
McKay’s neighbour, the first to discover the woman, told this newspaper yesterday that at about 5 pm on Wednesday a boy came over to tell her that the woman wanted to see her. Stabroek News was told that McKay was attacked two hours before and had struggled to make her way to the stairs where she could get someone’s attention.
“He throw kero all over her skin,” Booker said. “This thing happen in the bedroom because when we get there if you see blood on the floor and the bed…and there was a whole set of match sticks on the bed and floor…he wanted to kill her.”
Booker believes that after the man failed to light her sister afire he left her for dead thinking that she would bleed to death.
McKay and her attacker reportedly argued after which the man stabbed her repeatedly about the body. Relatives said that the majority of the wounds were concentrated around her neck area. After stabbing her he soaked her in kerosene and attempted to set her ablaze.
A close friend of McKay, among the group who had rushed her to the medical institution, recalled her horror at seeing the woman covered in blood and “coughing up blood at intervals”.
Meanwhile, a sobbing Carletta Brown described her niece’s lover as “a possessive man who isolated” McKay from everyone including her family. The woman said that she had warned her niece about the man but she remained in the relationship.
“Is only last month de two of them had a story and he chop up her cell phone and knock she and one set ah things,” Brown recalled. “This is na de first time they get story neither.”
They vowed that they would not let the matter drop and intended to get justice for McKay.
“We ain’t taking it so,” Booker declared vehemently. “We ain’t gonna rest until he in the hands of the police.”
