“I can’t remember is wha happen,” Sharmin McKay whispered from her High Dependency Unit (HDU) bed yesterday. “I think he knock me out before he start to stab…he throw kero down my throat.”
McKay, 32, was battered and repeatedly stabbed by her former lover who turned himself in to police on Thursday afternoon. The man, who was before the court for assaulting McKay last month, has since been remanded to prison for the second time this year.
The Bachelor’s Adventure Backlands (Bare Root) woman yesterday said that she can’t remember what happened on Wednesday afternoon. There was no indication, McKay said, that the man intended to harm her.
“Nothing; nothing ain’t happen on Wednesday to make him behave like this,” McKay recalled. “The last thing I remember is lying on the bed with him [her attacker] and then nothing after that. I have a few blurred memories where I think I remember he was stabbing me with a eating fork and then I think I remember throwing up kero.”
In a voice laced with fear McKay said that she “can’t even remember” how she got to the hospital. Relatives, she said, explained to her that she managed to get the attention of a boy who she sent to call her neighbour.
“They told me how I somehow managed to get out on the steps and call to this little boy who go and call my neighbour,” she said. “But I can’t remember doing any of that. All I remember is pain. I remember my stomach and skin burning and after then just numbness.”
Her father, McKay recalled, was in the yard when the man launched his attack but she never got a chance to scream for help. The woman said her throat and stomach feel as if they’re on fire and she still can’t swallow anything.
“I could be a dead woman,” McKay stated. “I was told that he tried to light me afire…I’m sure he planned to tell people that I kill myself.”
McKay told this newspaper that she was involved with the man for just over a year and last month they had a misunderstanding. The man, she said, had lashed her several times with a cutlass because of a cellular phone.
“Is only last month we had a problem,” McKay told Stabroek News. “He lash me up with a cutlass and I report the matter to the station. He was in prison and is only last Friday he get out on bail.”
The woman described her former boyfriend as a possessive and abusive man who “appeared quiet but was far from being that”. Once you get into some things, McKay said, it’s hard to get out.
McKay was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Wednesday evening and underwent emergency surgery. The knife used by McKay’s attacker was still lodged in her abdomen yesterday afternoon but relatives said it will be removed shortly.
