Winners of the Grove Inter-block programme yesterday received an undisclosed amount of money following their performance at the final match between North and South Grove with a presentation from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Captain of the winning team, Levi Braithwaite, said it was wonderful to win the trophy this year adding that in order to retain the title they would need to sustain their form.
“We are gonna train hard and be disciplined and be in for a war next time,” he declared.
This is the first time North Grove has won the title from last year’s winner South Grove.
Skipper of the South Grove team, Dexter Archer, said that his team worked relentlessly to keep the title but the competition got really fired up this year.
“It’s hard! We worked extremely hard but unfortunately we lost to a better team. Competition was stiff this time `round but we want to see a step up for next year. The idea of Inter-block was good.”
In a tone of rivalry Archer admitted that his team would not be going down without a fight at the next Inter-block tournament.
The organizers hope to include basketball and volleyball next year.
“Our basic vision for this is to bring it into a national event because of the fact that it would be a precursor of what to expect. We are still fine-tuning some parts but this is just the start of something important,” said Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and Steve Ninvalle.
Dominic Garnett was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and has been earmarked for the national team for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) tournament in Trinidad this August. Orson Francoise was the highest goalscorer.
