The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Medical Corps distributed $200,000 worth of pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies at two Berbice River communities when it conducted an outreach exercise last month.
In a press release the army said the activity is part of the Force’s Hearts and Minds programme which seeks to enhance and maintain relationships with communities countrywide; providing critical services to them.
A total of 118 residents from Calcuni settlement and Coomacka Waterfront were treated for illnesses including peptic ulcers, arthritis, skin disorders, hypertension, influenza, fungal and urinary tract infections. Persons also underwent pregnancy and diabetes testing and 19 persons were counselled and tested for HIV. Several persons also benefited from dental care including extractions and fillings.
The army said 131 mini dental kits along with the pharmaceuticals were donated to the Calcuni Health Centre and the St Thomas Primary School at Coomacka. Medex Johnson and Ms Mackintosh received the items for the two entities, respectively. According to the GDF residents said they were grateful for the supplies and services.
