Overseas-based Guyanese Charles ‘Wheels’ Henry in collaboration with the Flying Aces Cycling club of New Amsterdam, former Mayor Errol Alphonso and the Guinness Bar of Main and Lad Lane Streets, New Amsterdam has organised a 40-mile cycle road in Berbice today.
The event, which is open only to Berbicians, will pedal off from 8am at Main and Lad Lane Streets in New Amsterdam proceed to Adventure on the Corentyne, and return to the starting point for the finish.
A number of attractive incentives are on offer for the outstanding participants including the top six finishers and the outstanding, veterans, juveniles, BMX, upright and female riders.
Eight sprint point prizes will also be on offer.
Commissioner of Police Henry Green and Director of Prisons Dale Erskine along with Henry will be on hand to distribute the prizes at the end of the race.
Among other prominent persons who will be on hand to assist with the prize giving exercise which will take place at the Guinness Bar are Alphonso, Mayor Claude Henry, Commander of `B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner, George Vyphius, Superintendents Marlon Chapman and Owen Trotz and prominent Attorney-at-Law Mursaline Bacchus.
The Commissioner of Police will also hand over $100,000 and a set of uniforms to the Rollers Volleyball Club which won the recent Charles Henry Independence competition held in New Amsterdam.
Henry, a former national volley ball stalwart in the late 70s and 80s, also participated in a number of other disciplines. He now resides in the United States and since his return to Guyana has been organizing a number of community-based activities.
He has pledged to help revive the many sporting disciplines that once made Guyana proud.
