Dear Editor,
I just have a quick question for the husbands, fathers and men of our humble society. My question is, have they all gone mad?
The reason I am asking this is because as a young man, I couldn’t help feeling ashamed after reading in the newspapers for all of last week how many heinous acts of murder and assault had been meted out to the mothers, wives and women of our society. Truly, this is a very low level to which we have sunk if our men find it necessary to solve domestic issues by destroying the women with whom they share their lives. What is more disturbing is the fact that it is occurring with alarming regularity, to the point where it has become almost the norm to open the newspaper and see domestic abuse in the headlines. Domestic abuse? It seems more like a culling.
I’d like to see hanging become the mandatory result for a man who takes it upon himself to batter and ultimately murder his woman. Apparently, what currently happens is these men either linger in jail for years awaiting trial, or they commit suicide immediately after their beastly acts. I wonder if our Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is paying attention. I haven’t heard anything from the Minister and her people in a long time. Of course, I may have missed something they said in the news, but the time for talking and condemning has long past. It is time to get tough.
Guyana, please wake up and stand up for your women. They are the mothers and daughters of our land, and they have every right to live and prosper and make choices like anyone else. I urge all to demand that something be done so that we can protect the rights of our women. I’d hate to see Guyana become known literally as ‘The Fatherland.’
Yours faithfully,
MA Hassan
