A 21-year-old man, who allegedly threatened to stab a young woman with a pair of scissors if she didn’t allow him to rob her, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on June 17 at Georgetown, Rafael Jordan of 27 Paradise Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, being armed with scissors, robbed Latoya France of a cell phone and cell phone accessories valued $61,500.
Jordon pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms when it was read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Gregory Gaskin who represented the defendant told the court that the virtual complainant (VC) had communicated to him that she no longer wished to proceed with the matter.
When given a chance to respond, however, the VC said that she decided against dropping the matter since she is still in fear for her life and feels threatened by the defendant. The VC added that whenever she remembers the incident she feels very traumatised.
Jordan’s lawyer, after listening to the response by the VC, then made an application for reasonable bail to be granted his client.
Prosecutor, Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram objected to the bail application on the grounds that the defendant had given three different addresses to the court.
The unemployed Jordon was subsequently remanded to prison until June 24.
