The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is to sign a contract on Tuesday with a team from Brazil for the maintenance of the army’s flagship GDFS Essequibo.
The deal underscores growing defence ties between Georgetown and Brasilia. The GDFS Essequibo is a reconverted British minesweeper. Traditionally the GDF has sourced significant defence assistance from the US and the UK.
Maintenance of the flagship is a significant expense to the army.
