A 32-year-old man yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer the charges of resisting a police officer, using indecent language and expectorating.
It is alleged that on June 19 at Georgetown, Seecharan Rampersaud of 62 Independence Street resisted a police officer. The defendant also allegedly on the same day made use of indecent language to Corporal Livingstone. On June 19 too, Rampersaud is also alleged to have spat in the Stabroek Market.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of expectorating and not guilty to the other two charges when they were read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.
When given a chance to respond, the defendant explained to the court that on the day in question, he was sweeping around the market when he detected an obnoxious scent that caused him to spit, just when Corporal Livingstone was passing. He maintained, however, that he was innocent of the other two charges brought against him.
Rampersaud was later placed on $20,000 bail for the charges to which he pleaded not guilty and was placed on a nine-month bond to keep the peace for the charge of expectorating. He was ordered to return to court on July 10.
