The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities elected a new executive and established several committees aimed at fulfilling its mandate, when it held its first general elections held on May 22.
In a press release the Council said Leon Walcott was elected chairperson, Jeanette Jordan, vice chairperson; Simone Poole, secretary; Mala Nankishore, treasurer; Rajkumarie (Lalita) Madray, assistant secretary and Ganesh Singh, public relations officer. It said too Lawrence Hallahan, Mark Archibald and Compton Wilson were appointed committee members.
The Council said it intends to focus on three broad areas in providing support to organisations of and for persons with disabilities. They are information and advice, unification and working together and advocacy for disability rights. It also established four other committees in keeping with this mission and will provide support through advocacy, awareness, education and information, skills training and other means.
The groups are the Fundraising Committee which comprises Nankishore, Poole, Clifton Charles, Paul Cottam and Lennox Wyatt; the Project Management committee comprising Theresa Pemberton, Singh, Laurie Greenidge, Patsy Mallay and Hilton Morris; the Media Relations group comprising Singh, Walcott and Oliver Clarke and a Special Events committee comprising Wilson, Jordan, Madray, Joan Mapp and Cecil Morris.
