Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday granted a 21-year-old and an 18-year-old bail when they appeared before her charged with stealing a quantity of quicksilver valued $1.7M.
The teen, Vishal Samaroo of 334 Section E, Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara and Steven Marks, 22, of Lot 82 Atlantic Village, East Coast Demerara both pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
They denied that they had stolen 235 pounds of quicksilver valued $1.7M, property of Omkar Persaud of K&B Mining.
Marks’ lawyer Rexford Jackson stated that his client, along with Samaroo, should be admitted to bail on the grounds that they posed no risk of flight and the offence was a bailable one. The lawyer also stated that both Marks and Samaroo were innocent of the charge.
He said also that Marks had never been charged before for any matter.
The prosecution noted, however, that none of the quicksilver was recovered.
The magistrate subsequently placed both Marks and Samaroo on bail in the sum of $200,000 each and ordered that they appear again in court on July 17.
