Dear Editor,
I just arrived home after my visit to Guyana. Well I am proud to say I was pleasantly surprised at the little improvements since my last visit. On my arrival at the airport I was greeted very professionally and was grateful that there are now luggage trolleys!
There are a few things I noticed on this trip which shocked me, the main one being the number of spousal killings in the country. Every day there was another one; why is this? I can only hope that a solution is found soon, so that the number of children that are left behind isn’t too geat.
Crime seems to have soared since my last visit and the very visual padlocks, grills, gates and security alarms in homes is very disheartening. I hope the government is addressing the fact that most people I spoke to do not feel safe in their own homes, and is putting in place plans for more lighting, more security guards, police patrols and a quicker response time. My last pet peeve is the drivers who insist on blinding on-coming traffic with their high beams at night. This is not only very dangerous, but totally unnecessary.
I’m looking forward to coming back very soon. I love Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Andrea Stewart
