PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – PowerGen Sports captured their third Premiership title, when their final round match against Clarke Road United in the 2009 Trinidad & Tobago Premier Division ended in a stalemate at Syne Village in Penal last weekend.
Led by T&T all-rounder Samuel Badree, the Electricity Boys quelled any doubts in the mathematical equations by picking up three batting points which were more than enough to lift the prestigious trophy and pocket the handsome winner’s cheque of US $25,500.
Going into the final day of the last round, the Electricity Boys, champions in 2000 and 2006, led the 10-team standings with 159 points – 30 ahead of nearest challenger Clarke Road United, who found the host team a difficult opposition to peg back in their attempt to force an outright win.
Before a large and vociferous crowd of hometown supporters, skipper Badree won the toss, and opted for first strike.
Clarke Road were made to toil for most of the day, as PowerGen tallied a challenging 262 with half-centuries from Sherwin Ganga 65 and Badree.
Dave Mohammed made 40, and fellow T&T and West Indies player Ravi Rampaul was unbeaten on 32. Mohammed and Rampaul featured in an enterprising last-wicket stand of 73.
Best bowler for Clarke Road was Mahadeo Moonasar, who bagged five for 34.
Left with 28 overs batting, Clarke Road United conceded first innings to PowerGen after they declared on 129 for three.
At St. Mary’s College, Queen’s Park grabbed third place in the table, after they defeated dethroned champions Merry Boys Sports on first innings.
Replying to the Parkites modest first innings total, Merry Boys flattered to deceive, and were bundled out for 129 with spinner Sunil Narine being the destroyer with figures of five for 35.
Rain prevented any further play in the contest, and the remaining matches ended in stalemates.
