Police constable Kord Sobers on Wednesday testified before Magistrate Ann McLennan that he had seen a Linden man accused of possession hitting a girl before he searched him and found ganja hidden in his crotch.
It is alleged that on September 26, at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground Kevin Samuels had 234 grams of cannabis in his possession, for the purpose of trafficking.
In his testimony at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court Sobers said on the day in question he had responded to a telephone call about an incident at the MSC ground around 4.40 pm.
He told the court that when he arrived on the scene he noticed a large crowd gathered and upon further investigation found Samuels hitting a school girl. He said he then advised the girl to make a report at the nearby Mackenzie Police Station.
Sobers said he then proceeded to conduct a search on Samuels’s person and discovered the narcotic concealed in his crotch. He said on showing Samuels the drugs the man said, “Officer is lil weed ah buy fuh smoke.” On that account Samuels was arrested and taken into police custody.
The sealed drug along with a certificate from the drug and analyst department was shown to Sobers who acknowledged them as the evidence in the matter. However, when the package was shown to Samuels he said that he could not authenticate them because his lawyer was not at court.
The magistrate overruled his objection and the package was accepted into evidence. Samuels also refused to question Sobers when he was given the opportunity to do so. He was ordered to provide his lawyer with all the information from the testimony and to bring his witnesses to court for the next hearing set for August 26.
