Well-known former radio broadcaster Pat Cameron better known as ‘Aunty Pat’ is gravely ill in a US hospital.
Cameron, whose voice was one of the best known on the local airwaves for some four decades before she migrated, is said to have suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. According to reports, she was placed on a respirator but it has since been removed and she is breathing on her own.
Ron Robinson, a veteran broadcaster himself, worked with Aunty Pat for many years and he recalled that she was “the aunty” of many even those who were older than her. Robinson said she was an aunty to him and Vic Insanally in their early years of broadcasting. She had a popular radio programme titled ‘A visit with Patricia’ on which she did features.
“She is the finest female broadcaster the Caribbean has every produced,” Robinson told Stabroek News.
Cameron worked alongside another iconic female broadcaster, Olga Lopes-Seale also known as ‘Aunty Olga’, who now lives in Barbados.
Apart from being a broadcaster Aunty Pat was also an actress and had performed at the Theatre Guild.
This newspaper has also learnt that Cameron had also been having eye problems and is now blind.
The 85-year-old Cameron has three children, Gail, Dianne and Christopher.
