According to a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the initiative will also see $19M being spent on road upgrades at Onderneeming. The programme was conducted at the Regional Democratic Council Hall at Anna Regina.
According to Housing Minister, Irfaan Ali, the ministry will continue to improve and develop a system which will be satisfactory to all of its customers.
“We want to bring governance closer to the people, we want to bring services closer to the people, we want to reduce the burden and cost of transacting business from you the people to the government,” Ali told the applicants.
GINA noted that the recent lifting of the commercial banks’ ceiling to $3M as well as an announcement by President Bharrat Jagdeo of the creation of a $2M revolving fund will assist potential home owners to construct their new homes.
The release noted that some 75,000 people in the area will benefit from the completion of a water treatment plant and wells, adding that in excess of $585M was spent on the development of the housing and water sectors in 2008.
Acting CEO of the Guyana Water Inc, Yuri Chandisingh stated that over the years the water utility company has been able to make improvements to its services on the Essequibo Coast.
However, Chandisingh noted that there are a few areas on the coast which continue to pose challenges and continue to experience water supply problems.
He assured persons in the area that the water supply will be improved in the near future.
According to GINA, within the next two years the Housing Ministry plans to develop an additional 17,000 house lots across the country, in addition to approximately 80,000 house lots which were allocated by the Ministry since 1992, the release noted.
