Dear Editor,
President Bharrat Jagdeo is once again providing clear-headed and visionary leadership in dealing with new difficulties facing Guyana.
I feel that he is definitely looking at the big picture, dealing with the problems affecting Guyanese citizens, but in a way that maintains our Caricom vision and mission, while at the same time dealing with the immediate concerns and difficulties of all our citizens, arising as a result of the implementation of new immigration policies announced by Barbados Prime Minister Mr David Thompson.
I think few believe that the Barbados Prime Minister, or his government expected or intended the draconian actions taken by some Barbadians in carrying out the new policies.
It is expected that the Prime Minister, his government and the authorities will have taken immediate steps to put a stop to the alleged abuses and ill-treatment of non-nationals. Barbados, as a country enjoys a very high regard in the region and internationally for their standards of governance and adherence to the rule of law, and they must not allow themselves to lose this high status by the actions of a few misguided people.
I think that our President Bharrat Jagdeo is seeking to bring about a solution with his Barbados counterpart and other heads of Caricom, that will strengthen and maintain goodwill in the best interests of Caricom and all its people.
Yours faithfully,
John Da Silva
