“Your honour I was drunk de night. I just go and brace up on de car to vomit and I can’t remember nothing,” a 24-year-old man accused of attempting to steal a car told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
Sherwin Hopkinson of 2878 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempting to commit a felony when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on July 5 in Georgetown, Hopkinson attempted to steal motor car HB 6210; a white AT 192. The vehicle, reports said, was parked outside the owner’s home.
The accused explained to the court that it was his “boss man’s” birthday that day and he was attending a gathering in the area. As he was making his way home, Hopkinson explained, he began feeling nauseous and leaned against the car.
This, the man said, was his last memory in the area and he woke up later to find himself at the Brickdam Police Station.
According to the prosecution, the virtual complainant (VC) secured his car and parked it “on the street corner” outside his home. A few hours later, after 11 pm, the VC said he was awakened by his vehicle’s alarm. The accused was confronted and the police alerted.
Magistrate Robertson reprimanded Hopkinson over his drinking and granted him $25,000 bail. He returns to Court Two on July 31 when the VC will be summoned.
