The University of Guyana and UNICEF have collaborated on the setting up of a documentation centre which gives students and interested persons the tools to track the progress of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as it relates to women and children.
The centre was officially launched yesterday in the presence of Vice Chancellor Professor Lawrence Carrington and UNICEF country representative Johannes Wedenig.
The launching which took place at both the Turkeyen and Tain campuses offers access to the information software DEVINFO which is being installed on computer systems through collaboration with the Statistical Bureau.
To help facilitate the process UNICEF has donated three computers, a printer and a scanner along with research material and several books.
The software also gives access to general information on the work and mandate of UNICEF. Users of the software will be able to track progress being made by individual countries in the attainment of the MDGs. It also allows for a comparison of data between countries.
The UNICEF/UG documentation centre will be open to students as well as members of the public and will operate during the working hours of the library.
UG and UNICEF have inked a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the areas of collaboration and responsibilities for the joint venture.
