Belfield Tigers crowned
Belfield Tigers crushed Mid Section Lions, 5-1, in the final to become the champions of the seventh Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Inter-Block Football Competition at the Victoria Community Centre ground on Sunday.
The competition’s top finishers received their prizes yesterday morning in a presentation at the ministry’s head office on Main Street.
A huge crowd braved the rainy weather to witness a night of intense football action.
Belfield Tigers was the centre of attraction on the evening of reckoning while Victoria Kings U-17 defeated Buxton Under-17 and Georgetown Females got past Victoria Kings Females in prior encounters.
Former national under 17 player Rolson “Crespo” Morrison, one of three brothers on the Belfield Tigers side, netted his first of two goals in the 19th minute after MSL’s Ruben Morris made a bad pass and Morrison pounced on the ball and shot it hard and wide of advancing goalkeeper Ron Collins.
Eight minutes later Morrison rocked the net again from just inside the 18-yard box after he received a cross from Aubrey Gibson as the first half ended 2-0.
Ryan Morrison made it 3-0 in the 62th minute when he shook defender Mortimer Murphy and fired a shot that beat the custodian to his left.
Aubrey Gibson pushed his tally of goals to six in the 69th minute when he tapped in a cross from Kempton Williams while Ryan recorded his second goal of the night when he beat the Mid Section keeper again.
In the U-17 encounter Victoria Kings had to work hard to defeat a determined Buxton team 2-0. The first half concluded nil all but then the Buxton defence crumbled and Delroy Thomas rocked the net in the 52nd minute.
Thomas then netted his second goal in the 83rd minute to give his team a comfortable lead which they defended to the final whistle.
The female battle saw Georgetown Females Alicia Allicock drawing first blood in the 11th minute as the first 45 minutes concluded 1 – 0 with Buxton down.
The Georgetown ladies added two more goals in the 67th and 79th minutes to complete the 3-0 margin on their opponents.
