Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that a 34-year-old man be remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with robbing another man at a city nightclub.
Joshua Payne of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence.
He denied that he used personal violence to rob Carl Jacobs of a wallet containing a quantity of cash and several other items, totalling $69,800.
Payne stated that he was a citizen of the US and he wanted to go back there. He also stated that he could not remember the exact lot number of the place he was staying at in Victoria.
Jacobs, who was also present in court, said he was at a nightclub in Georgetown when the incident occurred.
He alleged that he was on his way to the washroom when Payne attacked him from behind. He told the court that the accused grabbed him and dealt him several blows about his body with his fist before robbing him of the articles.
Jacobs said the accused then attempted to flee the scene but several onlookers caught him and held him down until the police came.
The magistrate ordered that Payne be remanded to prison and that he return to court on July 22.
