It has been in the making for close to eight years and now local boxing fans can expect an epic battle between two of Guyana’s prize fighters in a showdown dubbed “The End Game” billed for the end of September.
Guyana’s former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis and former world contender United States-based Raul Frank have both signed contracts meet in a bout promoted by McNeal Promotions.
Frank, a former USBA light middleweight champion who is on a short visit to Guyana signed for the fight while head of McNeal Promotions Odinga Lumumba disclosed to reporters yesterday at Leisure Inn Hotel that “Sixhead” Lewis penned for the bout a few months ago.
According to Lumumba the bout is expected to take place on September 26 or October 3 and will serve as an elimination contest with the winner facing Howard “Battersea” Eastman for the national middleweight title on Boxing Day.
“This fight represents an historic moment for boxing in Guyana and it has been in the making for a number of years,” said Lumumba.
According to the promoter the two fighters are not older men but they are matured and it could be the end for the loser so the card will be dubbed “The End Game” and he called on the Guyana Boxing Board to assist in promoting the contest.
Frank, a two-time world title contender said boxing fans can expect a good fight, and he is confident of winning and will take the national title back to the United States when that time comes.
Frank said he respects Lewis so he will be in top shape for the bout.
He disclosed that he still spars with some of the world’s top boxers at Gleeson’s gym in New York.
Frank’s son Joshua who is also vacationing with him said his father will be at his best against Lewis.
GBB President Peter Abdool said boxing fans can look forward to an excellent fight since both boxers are top quality fighters.
Lumumba said the card will be finalized soon.
Frank who is now 40 years old has a professional record of 38 fights with 28 wins including 14 KOs and five losses and three draws. He last fought in October 2008 when he scored a technical knockout over Winston Pompey at the National Stadium Providence. He also lost to Vernon Forrest for the vacant IBF welterweight title.
Lewis became Guyana’s first world champion when he scored a unanimous points decision over Greg Paige for the WBA welterweight crown but lost the title the following year. Thirty-eight year old Lewis last fought on the same Frank/Pompey card when he lost by a close points decision to Eastman for the national middleweight title.
Lewis has a professional record of 30 bouts 23 wins including 20 KOs four losses and two draws.
