A 54-year-old, who had appeared in court in April on a charge of felonious wounding of his uncle, was yesterday back in court on a charge of murder after the man died.
Christopher Anderson was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on May 4, Anderson of 2566 Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt murdered Garnett Woolford. The incident had occurred on April 21. On April 21 at Georgetown, the said Anderson is also alleged to have assaulted Police Constable Mortimer Smith.
Anderson was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder and pleaded not guilty the charge of assaulting the police officer.
The unrepresented Anderson when given a chance to respond made an application for bail on his own behalf. The Acting Chief Magistrate however advised him that bail is not usually granted for the offence of murder.
On April 25, Anderson had appeared before the Acting Chief Magistrate to answer to the charge of feloniously wounding Woolford.
On that occasion, Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram said that the court should not consider granting Anderson bail since Woolford was still hospitalized. He said that Woolford’s condition was “stable but serious”.
Seetaram noted that Anderson had chopped Woolford several times about his body with a cutlass shortly after a disagreement between them.
The prosecutor also stated that Anderson would usually threaten to kill Woolford every time they had a disagreement.
Seetaram went on to say that while Smith was attempting to arrest Anderson shortly after the incident “he threw a hot cup of coffee in de policeman face.”
The police had stated that Woolford had lost his left eye as a result of the incident. They said that several chop wounds were also evident to his head and other parts of his body.
Yesterday, the defendant who identified himself as a legal, social and industrial counsellor was remanded to prison until July 21.
