Sixteen teams will be contending in the quarter-finals of the Guinness Futsal Tournament set for tonight as they battle for top honours in the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport/Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized tourney.
The four tournament matches set for tonight are Flamingo versus South Soesdyke, Sunburst Camptown versus BV Sideline Dam, Pele versus Victoria and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) versus Alpha United.
There are also three exhibition match-ups: Camp Street Taxi Drivers versus Clippers Barber Shop, Customs versus Upper Level Barber Shop and the female encounter between Eagles and Victoria.
Seven matches were played on Wednesday evening where Alpha hammered Buxton Back 8 – 1, Pele drilled Riddim Squad 5 – 1, BK International Western Tigers sunk North Grove 6 – 0, Santos got past Plaisance Champions 3 – 2, Uprising stunned Ann’s Grove 4 – 1, South Soesdyke defeated Independence Boulevard 3 – 1, Victoria Kings played to a nil all-draw with the Houston Stars while the Northern Rangers gained a walkover from Crane Grove. Alpha were led by hat-tricks from the energetic Fablo DaSilva who scored in the 20th, 21st and 23rd minutes and the relaxed Ronson Williams (16th, 17th, 18th) with support from Leon Grumble and Gordon Henry who recorded goals in the second and 23rd minutes respectively, against Buxton.
Pele dominated yet another team as Troy Kellman rocked the back of the net thrice (1st, 5th, 12th) in the encounter where his team-mates Calvin Shepherd (24th) and Quincy Hemmerding (22nd) helped to extend the lead after Riddim Squad’s Dorville Stewart scored in the ninth minute.
Doubles from Kevin Gordon (6th and 24th) and Devon Millington (22nd, 23rd) and a goal each from Shermon David (14th) and Dwayne Daniels (24th) accounted for Western Tigers’ six goals while North Grove were not able to get past the opposition’s custodian.
In the nail-biting battle between Santos and Plaisance Champions, Santos went ahead early in the match with goals in the fourth, 11th and 17th minutes from Quincy Price, Dwayne Ali and Renault Fraser then were pulled back in the second half when Shawn Gittens and John Heyliger scored in the 20th and 23rd minutes but that was not enough to prevent their defeat.
Uprising shone in their match-up with Ann’s Grove and struck four goals past them compliments of Daniel Favorite (12th), O’Reilly Small (13th, 14th) and Omali Nassy (17th) while Maxton Adams scored in the 20th for Ann’s Grove.
