Six Guyanese have been honoured for their “sterling contributions” during the preliminary stages of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) as that body marked its 30th anniversary.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the persons honoured were placed in a special category titled “Class of 79” which comprised 120 persons.
Permanent Secretary at the ministry Pulandar Kandhi who is also the Deputy Chairman of CXC, presented the awards to the recipients including Clement Derrell, Juliet Persico, Belle Tyndall and Gwendolyn Pope. Posthumous awards went to Greta Welch and Joel Benjamin.
In his address, Kandhi said though only a few persons have been singled out, others also made valuable contributions. He said CXC stands out like a beacon as one of the most successful institutions in the Caribbean. He said even territories further afield are interested in what CXC has to offer.
Kandhi said in 1970 there were just over 30,000 students writing these examinations but last year that number climbed to 150,000. The permanent secretary said Guyana has also been publicly recognised through its achievements at CXC, particularly students from Queen’s College.
GINA said similar ceremonies were held in Barbados and in Jamaica.
