KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Off-spinner Alex Amsterdam led a Guyana fight-back as Barbados’ batting slumped again on the opening day of their fourth-round TCL Group West Indies Three-day Cup match yesterday. He snared four for 12 off 15 overs late in the evening as Barbados collapsed to 83 for five at the close in reply to Guyana’s paltry 169 all out.
Amsterdam accounted for prolific opener Kraigg Brathwaite (22), Dario Cummins (0) Roston Chase (13) and captain Jason Holder (3) to send Barbados tumbling in the late afternoon at Jamalco.
During this period, opener Anthony Alleyne stood firm until he was bowled by occasional off-spinner Trevon Griffith for 30 which included five fours.
Brathwaite and Alleyne seemed comfortable against Guyana’s new ball pair, adding 42 for the first wicket without much alarm.
The right-handed Brathwaite was the first to fall, caught at slip by Griffith off Amsterdam after facing 36 balls and striking three fours, and his dismissal triggered a Barbados batting collapse where five wickets fell for 27 runs in quick time.
At the close, Raymond Reifer was unbeaten on 14 and Kyle Mayers on six, and they carried Barbados’ hopes of overhauling Guyana’s total.
Earlier, Guyana after winning the toss and electing to bat on a good pitch, slipped from 113 for three in mid-afternoon to be eventually bowled out for 169, with their last seven wickets crumbling for 56 runs.
Middle order batsman Jonathan Foo top-scored with 51, compiled in 72 minutes off 62 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.
This was after opening fast bowler Holder and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican sent the Guyana innings into strife with penetrative spells.
Holder, who bowled with hostility and got lift from the pitch, finished with four for 34 while Warrican continued to be impressive with three for 27, carrying his tally for the tournament to 22 wickets.
Griffith hit 34 and Amsterdam, an unbeaten 26, to offer Foo support in the batting department.
