A Guyanese student has won a Notebook computer and US$500 after placing second in the CANTO 3rd Annual Telecommunication Information and Society Day essay competition.
According to a press release 17-year-old Dennis Heywood, a student of Richard Ishmael Secondary placed second from over 50 entries submitted from nine countries in the Region.
The contest was organised by the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organisation (CANTO) based in Trinidad. It was hosted under the theme ‘Protecting Children in Cyberspace.’
Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Deputy General Manager Terry Holder presented Heywood with his prize at a simple ceremony held at Telephone House on Tuesday. Gabriela Grant, a student of Queen’s College in Barbados won the first place.
She received a trip for two to attend CANTO 2009 recently held in Trinidad and Tobago, a Notebook computer and US$1,000. Entrants from St Kitts and Dominica placed third and fourth respectively.
According to the release, World Telecommunication Information and Society Day, spearheaded by the International Telecommuni-cation Union was observed on May 17. Students were invited to write a 600-word essay expressing their views on the pros and cons of Cyberspace with an emphasis on the protection of children over the internet.
The essays were judged on preset criteria based on educational and technical merit, creativity, organisation and mechanics, by a panel of experts in the field of telecommunications. The essays can be viewed on the website located at www.canto.org
