PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Trinidad & Tobago’s coach Russell Latapy had a hand in both goals in his Digicel Pro League debut, as Caledonia AIA of Morvant/Laventille edged W Connection 2-1 on Wednesday.
Playing at the Ato Boldon Stadium, the former Falkirk FC star played 78th minutes before being replaced with his side already ahead.
The 40-year-old Latapy had last played locally for the now defunct Trintoc back in 1988 before moving to Jamaican club, Portmore United and then onto Europe.
Jameel Perry put Caledonia ahead after only seven minutes but Andre Toussaint replied for W Connection in the 25th minute.
The deciding moment in the match came in the 51st minute when national midfielder, Keon Daniel fired in the winner for Caledonia who are now third on the table with 22 points, two adrift of new leaders, Joe Public and one behind two-time defending champions, San Juan Jabloteh.
Latapy, who was good enough in his career to play for Porto and Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, almost got on the scoresheet in the first half but his long range effort found the uprights.
Widely considered as perhaps the finest football talent to emerge from T&T, Latapy was thrust into the role as national coach earlier this year following the resignation of Francisco Maturana.
