The third annual Hernandez Memorial Volleyball Tournament is expected to get underway on Sunday from 10:00 hrs at the National Park volleyball court and it is being sponsored by the Hernandez family in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF).
John Sheldon Elquemedo Hernandez was brutally murdered on July 19, 2006 in unexplained circumstances.
He was a volleyball enthusiast who, though little was known of him, had great plans for assisting in the development of the sport. It is known that he spent endless hours playing the game he loved with a passion and encouraged others to do likewise, as it was his desire to strive in whatever way he could to foster this sport.
In celebration of his memory and in an effort to keep alive the sport that John loved, his family initiated a volleyball tournament in his memory and has received the full support of the Guyana Volleyball Federation.
According to a release from the GVF, the tournament has now been designated an official Third Division League and is written into their calendar of events.
Several teams from across the country including Moruca, the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) and defending champions Anna Catherina will vie for the first prize trophy and $15,000.
The second place winners will receive a trophy and $10,000 while medals will be given to each member of the teams finishing first and second.
Trophies will also be given out for the Most Valuable Player and the Best Dressed Team.
