A 22-year-old mini-bus conductor ap-peared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with the murder of Rajpattie Jagroop, who was stabbed to death on Tuesday night, and was remanded to prison.
Hameraj Rambachan of Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman. It is alleged that on July 21 at Zeeburg, WCD, he murdered Jagroop. Reports are on Tuesday night, Jagroop, 49, had been in her bed when Rambachan, who was reportedly drunk at the time, broke into her home and stabbed her to death. Jagroop was stabbed several times about the body and collapsed shortly after. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. The woman’s 17-year-old daughter, Basmattie Seswankar, was chopped to the head.
Rambachan was the ex-lover of Jagroop’s 19-year-old daughter. He was held by police shortly after the incident.
A post-mortem examination done yesterday by Dr. Nehaul Singh found that Jagroop died as a result of haemorrhage and shock due to multiple stab wounds.
In court yesterday, Rambachan’s lawyer, Kim Kyte-John, who appeared in association with
Keith John, asked that her client be taken for medical attention because he was in pain due to injuries suffered “at the hands of the police”.
The magistrate subsequently made the order.
Rambachan was remanded and will return to court on September 11 at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s court.
