A 48-year-old contractor who allegedly raped a woman was granted bail when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Nigel Brewster of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape and was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 by Magistrate Judy Latchman. It is alleged that on May 11, at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, he unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the woman, without her consent. A report was made and following investigations, he was charged.
Attorney-at-law Gloria Stephney entered an appearance for Brewster. In a bail application, she stated that her client is 48, lives at Lot 163 Anna Catherina and had left Guyana before returning to live. She said that he is divorced and has a 13-year-old child. The attorney told the court that her client works as a sub-contractor with Williams Electrical Services and is now attached to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) main office.
Stephney pointed out that since the allegation was made, her client had been placed on station bail and he reported to the police as required.
She further stated that Brewster is asthmatic and there is no case of him having any contact with the virtual complainant (VC). She asked that he be granted bail.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews had no objection to bail being granted. Brewster was ordered to return to court on September 4 at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
