The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHBC) will be closed to vehicular traffic for repairs tomorrow from 8.30 am to 10.30 am.
According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) the closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of junction-connecting posts. The closure will not affect marine traffic.
GINA said the works are part of a major overhaul and maintenance programme planned for the bridge. At the end of 2007, government made $555 million available to rehabilitate the bridge. This sum will cater for the removal, blasting, repainting and replacement of 79 pontoons; the construction of three large and one extra-large pontoon for the bridge’s high span and retractor and 320 deck plates. The works will also include the fabrication and installation of 100 mesh panels and repairs to the deckings.
