Police said that the man turned himself in at about 8 pm on Saturday and investigations are ongoing. At about 12:30 pm on Friday, a man armed with a gun, had robbed the Digicel office at Republic Avenue, Linden.
Police had said that investigations revealed that the sales representative, Onica Clarke, was attending to a number of customers when a man armed with a handgun, and with the lower part of his face covered with a handkerchief, entered and ordered them to lie on the floor. He then took away an undisclosed sum of cash and phone cards which he placed in a haversack and exited the building.
An alarm was raised and police ranks and public-spirited citizens gave chase, but the suspect ran into some bushes in the ‘five corner’ area and escaped. According to the police, the suspect was known to them. During the chase, the robber fired several shots at his pursuers and later exchanged gunfire with the police.
According to a close relative, at approximately 4:20 pm on Saturday the man made contact by phone and admitted to the crime. They said that they pleaded with him to surrender and he agreed. He told them he was along the Wisroc back road.
Contact was made with the pastor of the church where he worshipped who went with relatives to get him.
Stabroek News understands that he said that he lost the money and phone cards in the trench during his bid to escape arrest.
