Donette Awer, 47, of Lot 22 Kallicharran Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara and Oswald Roberts both pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The two denied that they had 88 grammes of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking on July 23 at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
However, Awer’s laywer, Michael Sommersall applied for bail for her on the grounds that she did not reside at the house where the narcotics were found. He explained that his client did part-time work with Roberts and on the day in question, Roberts had called her over to his home for her to do some cleaning.
He noted that the only reason that his client had been arrested was because she was on the premises “cleaning” when the narcotics were found. He noted that Awer told him that she overheard Roberts telling someone before the narcotics were found “is me own nah she own.”
Meanwhile, attorney Adrian Thompson who represented Roberts also applied for bail for him on the grounds that the narcotics may have belonged to someone else who had visited Roberts’ home several minutes before the drug bust. He noted that the narcotics were not found on his client’s person.
However, the prosecution objected to the bail applications on the grounds that the Act that the duo was charged under warranted a special circumstance for them to be admitted to bail.
He noted that no special circumstance was presented by either of the defence attorneys.
The magistrate then ordered that both Awer and Roberts be remanded to prison and transferred the case to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for July 29.
