Dear Editor,
As a resident living in Mabaruma, Region One, I would like to compliment the Region Nine sports organizer for his efforts to organize the North Rupununi Football Association games. I would like to congratulate the winning team and tell them to please keep it up.
It is nice whenever you open the newspapers and there is something on sport in that region; also Region 8 is not doing too badly.
Whenever I travel in my region and visit places like Port Kaituma and Mabaruma, people always say years ago we had football and cricket to a very high standard in the region and at times we toured the Essequibo Coast, but that does not happen now.
One of the things that is slowing down sporting activities in the region is the fact that we do not have a regional sports organizer attached to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, who is willing to work towards the development of sports.
At the last RDC meeting it was decided that there was an urgent need for a sports organizer for Region One, and all the councillors agreed to this.
I had encouraged a young man to apply for the position which he did through the Regional administrative office. He has the credentials from the job: he was born in the region and attended the Maburuma Secondary School, representing Guyana at the junior and senior levels. He also played in a few Caricom countries.
Sports fans are asking the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to assist the region in filling the vacancy.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Hope
