The Guyana Elections Com-mission (GECOM) has requested the police to investigate 253 confirmed cases of persons who applied for registration more than once during the 2008 house-to-house exercise.
The commission said in a news release yesterday that documents pertaining to those registration transactions were sent with a covering letter dated July 20, 2009 to the Commissioner of Police requesting investigation and the possible prosecution of the persons involved in such transactions.
It noted further that Section 9 (1) of the National Registration Act, Chapter 19:08 provides that “The Commissioner shall establish a central register which shall consist of the originals of the registration cards of all persons registered under this Act.”
And Section 11 (1) of the National Registration Act, Chapter 19:08 provides that no person shall be registered in more than one divisional register or more than once in any register established under Section 9.
Moreover, spelling out the penalties under the Act, the release added that under Section 21, Chapter 19:08 every person who procures or induces another person to procure his registration in more than one divisional register or more than once in any register established under Section 9 shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $5,000 and to six months’ imprisonment.
