Eight police officers attached to Eve Leary headquarters are being questioned in connection with an attempted robbery at the facility at the weekend.
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene said yesterday that at around 10:25 on Sunday, an officer who turned up for work in the finance department discovered a hole in the wall at the back of the office. He said an alarm was raised and the scene was visited.
Greene said investigators found that the air condition unit had been removed and the person(s) entered the computer room, broke out the door and got into the office.
The office contained three cages with safes and the person(s) broke into two of the cages but could not get into the safes. Greene said the safes had padlocks and cross bars and even though the padlocks appeared to be cut, the thieves still could not get in.a
He pointed out that whoever who conceived the act knew pensions were paid last Friday. He revealed that the police were hardly in possession of large sums of money, since most persons are paid by cheques. He said only about $100,000 in cash would have been in the safes.
Nothing was stolen during the break-in.
Meanwhile Greene lashed out at a Kaieteur News report which stated that cash, uniforms and boots were stolen from the facility. Greene said he was unsure where the newspaper would have gotten that information from. “This is the most hilarious reporting I have ever seen in all of my years of service in the Guyana Police Force,” Greene commented.
