Dear Editor,
The Guyana Police Force is responding to an article published in the Kaieteur News of Monday, July 27, 2009, under the caption ‘Bandits hit police headquarters.’
The article states that early Sunday morning it was discovered that thieves had broken into the Police Finance Office and made off with a significant amount of cash and cheques, and that thieves had also broken into the Police Quartermaster Stores at Eve Leary and escaped with uniforms, boots and about 100 police jerseys.
The Guyana Police Force wishes to state that the facts as reported in the article are incorrect and it is clarifying the situation.
At about 10:05hrs on Sunday, July 26, 2009, it was discovered that the Finance Office at Police Headquarters had been broken and entered. The perpetrator(s) had managed to gain entry into the building and had also broken into the cashier’s cage. A padlock to a safe was cut, but no entry was gained into the safe which had other forms of security.
A subsequent check revealed that nothing was stolen from the Finance Office.
Investigations into this matter are ongoing.
There has been no breakage or any report of theft at the Police Quartermaster Stores.
Yours faithfully,
Ivelaw Whittaker
Public Relations and Press Officer
