Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Colonel Godwin McPherson has died. He was 62 years-old.
McPherson passed away on Monday evening at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief period of illness. He had suffered a stroke and had been hospitalized for some time.
During his tenure at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Mc Pherson briefly served as acting head of the army. In 1995, he acted in the place of the then GDF head Brigadier Joe Singh, who was on a year’s study leave. McPherson was later interdicted from the army over his alleged involvement in financial irregularities that occurred during his period in charge. He was later exonerated of these charges by the courts.
Following his departure from the army, he dedicated much of his time towards the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association and gained his fair share of accolades and criticisms for his stewardship of the GABF over the years.
Mc Pherson was married to Patricia and was the father of two.
