Dear Editor,
The appearance of Troy Small on our TV screens came not too long after that of the late David Leander called ‘Biscuit.’ They were in similar condition after similar circumstances and made similar allegations. They made torture allegations against the military in one case and the police in the other, but these did not result in any known consequences to the perpetrators.
This is the new reality of Guyana. This is the new face of our nation. Lies and public abuse have been deployed against all critics to intimidate them into silence. Under cover of their enforced silence corruption is enveloping all levels of administration. The complete failure of governance and the capitulation of the PPP to all of these excesses have brought shame to our country. While a few are getting rich, thousands are thrown into the ranks of the unemployed each year and torture has become an instrument of law enforcement.
The PPP has been in office for too long. It has lost its moorings. It has failed its great leaders of the past, including Cheddi Jagan. The Jagdeo experiment – a new broom to sweep clean – has failed. All it did was to gather the PNC’s dust and repackage it in ‘democratic’ garb. Nothing else has changed. The PPP needs to be in opposition for a while again, and the way its going, it will get there eventually.
The PPP may win the elections on ethnic insecurities, but it will not win the hearts and minds of the people, even of its own supporters. As night follows day, its supporters will turn against its excesses.
Yours faithfully,
Cedric Robertson
