Coach Nicholas Fraser said the swimmers were constantly engaged in mental preparation before and after each event.
He also stressed the importance of time necessary in such a major competition as the Federation Internationale De Natation Amateur (FINA) World Championships.

“Our work here at the world championships must be done like clockwork and if we miss the bus or we get held up doing anything we stand a chance of not being able to perform well.”

Meanwhile, Noelle Smith yesterday faced her first day of competition.
Smith is the second female to represent Guyana at this competition following Asanti Mickle’s participation in Barcelona in 2003
Her first event was the 100m freestyle in which she was placed in the third of seventeen heats with a seed time of 1:08.38.
She was able to pull herself up one position from 10th to finish 9th in the heat with a time of 1:07.07.

“She was slow getting off the blocks but her pullout was well done and she looked like she had gotten into a good rhythm from the start. She was able to do 32.45 in the first 50m as we had planned the night before, but was not able to get off the wall and return with the same intensity,” said Fraser.
The three swimmers will be in action today in 50m freestyle and the 50m and 100m butterfly events.
