KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Barbados used a telling new-ball burst from captain Jason Holder to set up an uncomplicated seven-wicket win over the Windward Islands in their opening TCL Group West Indies One-Day Trophy Under-19 match yesterday.
Holder grabbed four for 22 with his pace to undermine the Windwards for 132 off 36.4 overs, and Barbados then coasted to an easy win off 34.1 overs at Kensington Park.
Barbados’ victory bid was launched by openers Anthony Alleyne and Kraigg Brathwaite who staged an enterprising, 91-run, opening stand to ensure there would be no hiccups. In contrasting innings, Alleyne stroked an attractive 50 while Brathwaite finished unbeaten on 49 not out.
Alleyne, who continues to impress immensely, stroked the ball to all parts of the ground as he scored a run-a-ball half-century with six fours.
He was eventually bowled by left-arm spinner Audy Alexander triggering a mini collapse where Barbados lost three wickets for nine runs, but Brathwaite held firm and was there at the end, having faced 97 balls and struck four fours.
Roston Chase (1) and Maradon Benn (2) were both run out attempting second runs to leave Barbados at 100 for three.
However, Brathwaite and Raymond Reifer, 17 not out, saw Barbados through to their required target without further loss as the two shared an unbroken stand of 35.
